My new step-by-step watercolor book
Sometimes, something meaningful comes out of a quiet year.
In 2020 — when the world briefly stood still — I had the opportunity to work on a book about my watercolor technique. The project came about in collaboration with Royal Talens and publisher Luitingh-Sijthoff, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sakura Japan, the parent company of Royal Talens. I was invited to share my approach using their Koi Watercolors and Sakura Brush Pens — materials I love for their soft, vibrant colors.
The book naturally grew out of what I love most: drawing, painting, and quietly observing nature. Its Japanese theme was a perfect fit with my fascination for Zen and Zen drawing. Several subjects reflect that — including the koi carp, sika deer, Japanese maple, and cherry blossom.
The result was a book in Dutch titled 'Watercolor in Simpele Stappen', published in early 2021. It contains 25 step-by-step watercolor projects that gently guide readers from a single line to a complete image. It’s a calm and accessible way to learn to paint with watercolor — where the focus isn’t on perfection, but on attention and presence. Each exercise shows the colors I used, while encouraging people to make their own choices and develop their own style.
Update April 2025: The printed edition of the Dutch version is currently sold out, but good news — it’s now available as an e-book via Bol.com. I’m also working on a translated English version, which I hope to share soon in my webshop.
